Of all the amusements which can possibly be imagined for a hard working man, after his daily toils, there is nothing like an entertaining book. It relieves his dullness. It takes him to a lovelier and more interesting scene; while he enjoys himself there, he may forget the evils of the present moment. Nay it accompanies him to his day’s work and gives him something to think, besides the drudgery of his everyday occupation. If I were to pray for a taste which should stand me in good stead under every variety of circumstances and be a sources of happiness and cheerfulness through life, it would be a taste for reading. Give a man this taste and the means of gratifying it and you can hardly fail of making him a happy man, unless, indeed you put into his hands most preverse selection of books. You place him in contact with the best society in every period of history, with the wisest, the tenderest, the bravest, and the purest characters which have adorned humanity.
বঙ্গানুবাদ : একজন কঠোর পরিশ্রমী মানুষের প্রতিদিনের পরিশ্রমের পর খাটুনি শেষে তার জন্য সম্ভাব্য যে সকল বিনোদন কল্পনা করা যায় তার মধ্যে বিনোদনমূলক বইয়ের মতো আর কিছুই নেই। এটি তার নীরসতা দূর করে। এটি তাকে একটি প্রেমময় ও অতি আকর্ষণীয় দৃশ্য বা পরিবেশের মাঝে নিয়ে যায়। এবং যেখানে সে তার নিজেকে উপভোগ করতে থাকে। ঐ মুহূর্তে সে তার মধ্যে বিরাজমান যন্ত্রণাগুলো ভুলে যায়। এটি তার দিনের কাজেই শুধুমাত্র যোগ হয় না; বরং তাকে তার দৈনন্দিন পেশায় ঝামেলা ছাড়াও কিছু বিষয়ে চিন্তা করতে শেখাবে। যদি আমি কোনো স্বাদের জন্য প্রার্থনা করতাম যা প্রতিটি পরিস্থিতিতে আমাকে ভালো অবস্থানে নিয়ে যাবে এবং জীবনের সুখ ও প্রফুল্লতার উৎস হবে তবে এটি হবে বই পড়ার স্বাদ। একজন মানুষকে এই স্বাদের মাধ্যমে সন্তুষ্ট করতে চাইলে এবং আপনি তাকে সুখি মানুষ হিসাবে গড়ে তুলতে খুব কমই ‘ব্যর্থ’ হতে পারেন, যদি আপনি তার হাতে বিকৃত কোনো বই নির্বাচন না করেন। আপনি তাকে ইতিহাসের প্রত্যেক পর্যায়ের উৎকৃষ্ট সমাজের বিজ্ঞতম, তীক্ষ্ম, নির্ভীক এবং বিশুদ্ধতম চরিত্রগুলোর সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেন যা তার মানবতাকে শোভিত করে।
